We all know that Israel occupied again the palestinian cities which where never given up from its control. This took place during the night of the 18th October. It is the second time during this conflict which brought down all peace negotiations. After the last invasion, in august, there was an "ceasefire" agreement by both sides in which the israelis accepted to retreat from Bethlehem and Beit Jala while the palestinians agreed not to shoot at the settlement of Ghilo.

On october 17th an israeli minister was assasinated by the Palestinians in vengeance for the assasination policy undertaken by the state of Israel against the palestinian political leaders. The event served Israel to justify an invasion plan of the territories of the autonomous palestinian authority and to violate the "ceasefire" agreements.

The evening of october 18th three palestinian leaders from the area of Bethlehem were assasinated by a car bomb. Their leaders considered this as an end to the "ceasefire" and opened fire on the jewish settlement of Ghilo. One must understant also that this settlement has been set up on land belonging to the inhabitants of Beit Jala which were confiscated by the governement of Tel Aviv and annexed to the territory of Jerusalem.

That same night tanks invaded Bethlehem and Beit Jala.......

For the annual pilgrimage organised by the Franciscan Custody of the Holy Land to River Jordan, site of the Baptism of Our Lord Jesus Christ, the friars of Bethlehem and the large christian community of that city could not participate as Bethlehem is still cut out from the outer world.
