The Sinai Desert and Egypt

154. Chortaso

Chortaso. The village is identical with Qartasa north of Damanhur. It was christianized in the 4th century at the latest, but never was a bishop's see. Greek and Coptic sources mention the martyrdom of St. Habakkuk and St. Senufe (around 306). The simple representation, however, shows no churches.
