Ezek. 35:4

BIBLICAL BACKGROUND

Deut 2:8 The sons of Esau living in Seir and in the Arabah
So we passed by our kin, the descendants of Esau who live in Seir, leaving behind the route of the Arabah, and leaving behind Elath and Ezion-geber. When we had headed out along the route of the wilderness of Moab.

Josh. 11:15-17 "Joshua took all that land"
As the Lord had commanded his servant Moses, so Moses commanded Joshua, and so Joshua did; he left nothing undone of all that the Lord had commanded Moses. So Joshua took all that land: the hill country and all the Negeb and all the land of Goshen and the lowland and the Arabah and the hill country of Israel and its lowland, from Mount Halak, which rises toward Seir, as far as Baal-gad in the valley of Lebanon below Mount Hermon. He took all their kings, struck them down, and put them to death.

Ezek. 35:1-4 Against the mountains of Edom
The word of the Lord came to me: Mortal, set your face against Mount Seir, and prophesy against it, and say to it, Thus says the Lord God: I am against you, Mount Seir; I stretch out my hand against you to make you a desolation and a waste. I lay your towns in ruins [Greek: eremian]; you shall become a desolation [Greek: eremos], and you shall know that I am the Lord.

Anonymus Placentinus, Itinerarium 35.36 (ca. 570 A.D.)
Leaving the city of Elusa we entered the desert. Twenty miles on is a fort, the guest-house of Saint George which provides something of a refuge for passers-by and gives food for hermits. Leaving that we went into the heart of the desert to the place of which the Bible says: " A land transformed into a salty waste because of the wickedness of its inhabitants". (Ps 107: 34).
