Mons. Robert Camilleri OFM has just been nominated auxiliary bishop of Tegucigalpa, Honduras. Bro. Robert is one of five friar members of the Maltese Province working in this mission. He is also the President of the Immaculate Conception (New York) Missionary Foundation in Honduras.
He has been chosen as auxiliary bishop to Oscar Cardinal Andres Rodriguez, Archbishop of Tegucigalpa. The Episcopal consecration will take place on the 15 of August, the Solemnity of the Assumption of Our Lady, at the Basilica of Nuesta Senora de Suyapa, Patron of Honduras. For the occasion the Apostolic Nuncio for Honduras Mons. George Panikulan, Cardinal Rodriguez and all the bishops of the Honduran Episcopal Conference will be present.
The son of John and Marianne née Azzopardi, Bro. Robert was born on the 24 of April 1951 in Hamrun Malta . He is the fifth in a family of six other brothers and three sisters. One of his brothers, Raymond, is also a Friar Minor. Bro. Robert entered the Franciscan Order on the 29th October 1967, made solemn profession on the 8th December 1972 and was ordained a priest by Pope Paul VI on the 29 of June 1975.
In Malta he was master of novices for three years and then departed as a missionary to Honduras. He was made Parish Priest in La Libertad where he stayed for ten years until November 1992, when he was transferred to serve as Parish Priest in El Calvario in Comauaguela. He tirelessly built houses for the poor, churches, parish centers and prepared lay people as catheticists. Until his nomination he was the administrator of the Istituto San Francisco.
