MEETING OF SECRETARIES OF FORMATION AND STUDIES AT SEOUL

Date: 21.2.2005
Source: Custody of the Holy Land

The Order of Friars Minor is organizing a meeting for the International Council of Secretaries of Formation and Studies at Seoul, South Korea, from 14 to 26 February 2005. Br. Noel Muscat, who is Secretary for Formation and Studies in the Holy Land Custody, has been invited to take part.
The meeting has as its theme "Inter-religious dialogue for peace in the Asian culture". The Korean OFM Province has kindly hosted this meeting with the typical oriental hospitality. The speakers during the meeting included a Buddhist monk, a professor of Confucian philosophy, and a professor of Islamic thought from Singapore. The speakers all stressed upon the fact that inter-religious dialogue in a multicultural context and in the globalised world of today is no longer an option but an obligation in order to strive for peace between peoples and religions.
The participants for the meeting also visited a Buddhist temple and met the community of monks. The Korean friars offered the opportunity to visit the various houses of the province, including the formation houses. The Korean OFM Province has a total of 160 brothers, and most of its members are young. Another interesting factor is that nearly half the Province is made up of brothers with a lay option in Franciscan life.
The friars also met the Minister Provincial, Br. Paul Ho, and all the young candidates in formation, including a group of 7 postulants and 5 novices, plus the temporary and solemnly professed young brothers.
The Korean Province organized all logistic and cultural activities in a truly professional way. The participants could not only learn new insights about Asian cultures, religions and philosophy, but they could also address them to the issue of peace in the world today and to the transmission of Franciscan values in non-Christian cultures.
The Secretary for Formation and Studies of the Order, Br. Massimo Fusarelli, thanked all the participants for their collaboration and encouraged them to write a letter to the whole Order explaining the positive outcome of the meeting and its impact on the formation programmes of the OFM Provinces.
