On October the second 2005 in the church of the seminary of the Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem in Beit Jala the ordination took place of His Excellency Mons. Maroun Lahham, who had been serving as rector of that seminary. A great many of the faithful and members of religious orders of that area took part in the celebration _ others came from Judea, Galilee and Jordan.
The Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem, Mons. Michel Sabbah presided at the Holy Mass and concelebrated by among others the Papal Nuncio, His Excellency Mons. Pietro Sambi and from the newly named coadjutant bishop, His Excellency Mons. Fouad Twal, already Archbishop of Tunisia, whose place will be taken by Pastor Mons. Maroun.
The Custodian of the Holy Land Pierbattista Pizzaballa represented the Custody and numerous members of the Franciscan students of the community of Saint Savior’s Monastery, who have had a friendly relationship with the newly ordained bishop through his teaching Theology at St. Saviour’s.
The celebration was enlivened by the songs performed by the seminarians of the patriarch and from some manifestations of joy “outside of the program” on the part of the faithful carried out in the festive Arab style of the local population.
His Excellency Mons. Maroun was taken by intense emotion at the end of the service while giving thanks, in particular when he remembered his mother, who was present at the celebration.
After the Holy Mass an exchange of congratulations took place with the new bishop in the courtyard of the seminary among the dancing of the faithful and the fire works organized for the occasion.
