B. Callegher
Cafarnao. Vol. IX. Monete dall’area urbana di Cafarnao (1968-2003)

The site of Capernaum, where Jesus preached and performed many of his miracles and from where five of the twelve apostles, foremost Peter originated, has attracted intense archaeological and scholarly interest ever since the American scholar Edward Robinson correctly identified its ruins with the center of Jesus’ Galilean ministry in 1838.
There are few sites like Capernaum, possibly with the exception of Qumran, where the interplay between the Scriptures, archaeology and written sources make any publication an event that immediately transcends the standard scholarly debate.
No doubt such is the present publication of Bruno Callegher dealing with the isolated coin finds accumulated from the village area of Capernaum during surveys and excavations conducted over the past hundred years.
In a meticulously detailed introduction Callegher takes his reader through the history of the sites’ exploration focusing on the coin finds. Here for the first time a comprehensive picture of the coin finds at Capernaum and their historical and archaeological significance is presented. The introduction is not only extremely helpful for both laymen and specialists but also presents fascinating new information about unpublished coin material in the holdings of the SBF at Jerusalem.
The chapter is followed by a in-depth analysis of the more than 1400 isolated coin finds with special attention paid to the provenance and the quantitative distribution of the coins by period — from the Seleucids to the Mamluks. By doing so for each of the periods Callegher moves beyond merely cataloging site coins used for dating excavated strata into the more fascinating facets of coin circulation and monetary history. In particular his minute description of the various categories of coins circulating in Capernaum during Roman and Byzantine rule (c. 90% of the total number of isolated coin found at the site) provide new and original insight into the use of money in Eastern Galilee during this period. Finally, the large number of references to the latest regional coin studies and sites and a copious bibliography turns Callegher’s study into a vital tool for both historians and numismatists dealing with the Roman and Byzantine East.

The Kingdom of God. A Bibliography of 20th Century Research

The centrality of the Kingdom of God in the eschatological message of Jesus and the great influence it has on Christian theological thought, need not be proven. This belief is sometimes so strong that in many studies, the theme of the Kingdom of God is simply presumed and the authors, after citing some classic texts, are reduced to saying only that the relevant bibliography is either too extensive or limitless. While this is without doubt true, it would also be good to know how much interest the Kingdom of God has generated in history. Moved by curiosity in the first place, and also to render a useful service to others, I wanted to compile a bibliography of the research on the Kingdom of God in the 20th century.
A work of this type has not be realised till now, as far as I know. There are, however, some studies that present literature related to the Kingdom of God in a partial manner (cf. chap. II.1). This bibliography seems therefore to be the first attempt in offering a complete panorama inasmuch as it is possible. Nevertheless it is necessary to set limits in order to achieve this.
As suggested by the title, the bibliography is dedicated to 20th century research. However some significant studies of the end of the 19th century are included; and this follows through to the latest updates of the beginning of 2006.
This bibliography is generally limited to studies that have the Kingdom of God as its major emphasis. This compiled material and the subdivisions by subject into 12 chapters comprise lexemes from dictionaries and encyclopediae, articles from periodicals, essays from collections, books, monographs and dissertations. Omitted are, with a few exceptions, Bible commentaries, works on the life and teaching of Jesus, as well as numerous works on Eschatology and Messianism, Sermon on the Mount, Beatitudes, Lord’s Prayer, Institution of the Eucharist, all of which usually contain some material on the Kingdom of God. There exist already bibliographies regarding these topics.
Regarding the parables of the Kingdom, scholars are not unanimous regarding its number. Some scholars have included all the parables of Jesus while others would consider only Mt 13 and its parallels. On my part, I consider these parables to be 16 in number, each preceded by a typical introductory formula «The Kingdom of God / of heaven is like…» and those parables that contain some phrases clearly referring to the Kingdom of God (cf. chap. V.22-40). The parable of the sower (Mk 4:3-9) and others have been left out. It is a decision which I realise is objectionable to some.
While the 1st chapter follows an alphabetical order, the consequent chapters are organised in a chronological order beginning with the earliest studies within the limits. In most cases, references to abstracts found in specialised works of this field or periodicals are added in square brackets (Internationale Zeitschriftenschau für Bibelwissenschaft und Grenzgebiete, Old Testament Abstracts, New Testament Abstracts). At times a summary of contents is provided, as are indications of reviews of certain important works.
The bibliography is organised according to chapters with various subdivisions. In order to facilitate a search, there are tree final indexes: index of Biblical references (limited to New Testament texts on the Kingdom of God or of Christ, and on the parables of the Kingdom), index of subjects and index of authors cited. I have tried to verify personally every title either from libraries or the Internet, but not all verifications are possible. I hope that in the future, with the help of suggestions and advise by users, the errors may be eliminated and other facts integrated.
No bibliography is ever complete. This is true even for this present bibliography which does not pretend to be exhaustive. It intends simply to be an instrument or a guide to initiate studies on the gospel theme of the Kingdom of God. I hope students new to the subject of the Kingdom of God and veteran scholars alike will benefit from this tool. It has taken three years to compile this work. If anyone has been spared the effort of collecting data and expedite the study of the mystery of the Kingdom of God with the help of this bibliography, then I consider my endeavour to be fulfilled.

, The Kingdom of God. A Bibliography of 20th Century Research (SBF Analecta 69), Franciscan Printing Press, Jerusalem 2007. xliv+873 pp.; fully indexed 17x24; U.S. $ 50.

At the beginning of 2007 my bibliography on the Kingdom of God was published [The Kingdom of God. A Bibliography of 20th Century Research (SBF. Analecta 69), Jerusalem: Franciscan Printing Press, pp. xliv-873] in which I collected the works on the subject until the beginning of 2006. In the meantime I discovered other studies and I have also continued to make notes on new issues. So the idea has come up to put this updated and new material on the internet (the divisions of the topics are the same as in the book). I think, it will make a good service to those who have purchased my book. Secondly, I hope to enrich my research with any kind of suggestion from others. I thank you all in advance.
