Week of Prayer for Christian Unity

Jan 27, 2004
Anglican Cathedral of St. George

The Liturgy for the week of prayer for Christian Unity in Jerusalem, and on the occasion of the visit of His Grace the Lord Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr. Rowan Williams.

God our Father,
In this house of prayer
You bless your people on their earthly pilgrimage
So quicken our consciences by your holiness,
Nourish our minds by your truth,
Purify our imaginations by your beauty,
And open our earths to your love,
That, in the surrender of our wills to your purpose,
The world may be renewed in Jesus Christ our Lord.

First Reading (Ephesians 2:13-22)

But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far off have been brought near in the blood of Christ. For he is our peace, who has made us both one, and has broken down the dividing wall of hostility, by abolishing in his flesh the law of commandments and ordinances, that he might create in himself one new man in place of the two, so making peace, and might reconcile us both to God in one body through the cross, thereby bringing the hostility to an end. And he came and preached peace to you who were far off and peace to those who were near; for through him we both have access in one Spirit to the Father. So then you are no longer strangers and sojourners, but you are fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God, built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus himself being the cornerstone, in whom the whole structure is joined together and grows into a holy temple in the Lord; in whom you also are built into it for a dwelling place of God in the Spirit.

Sermon by Dr. Rowan Williams

... In our prayers for the unity of Christians this last week, let us pray for those gifts to be shared among us all, so that we may more and more see the one road we all walk upon towards the Father, so that we become true agents of peace, so that we may begin to build a holy temple in our life together and to draw all our neighbours towards the peace that reigns where God dwells. Even here and even now, we have to hear the voice which says, ‘Do not let your hearts be troubled’; we have to let Jesus renew us in trust and lead us in the way where he walks before us.

(You will find the complete sermon on his website)

The Blessing

Christ the good shepherd,
Who laid down his life for his sheep,
Fill you with his love,
Inflame you with his passion for righteousness and truth,
And draw you and all who ear his voice
To be within one fold

Together with the Heads of Church

And the blessing of God,
+ Father, + Son, and + Holy Spirit,
come down upon you and reain with you.
